Wireless Mobile Broadband Card

Archive for March, 2009

I'm looking to get myself setup with mobile broadband but I don't know where to start. I would imagine using it to check my emails and browse the internet while away from home (possibly use MSN Messenger as well). However I want the best mix of connection, download limit and price. I'm with 02 for my mobile phone and Sky for my home broadband. Could someone make a recommendation?

The likelyhood is you won't find anyone who has tried more than one mobile provider. I have used T-Mobile mobile broadband, and I have worked for Orange, and I also run a broadband comparison site. So on the basis that I have not tried every provider I will give you advice on how to choose for yourself:

Check that the areas you need this broadband to work in are covered by the network (see second link below). Hopefuly this may have narrowed down the list. Of the providers who are left, they key things to compare are (in which ever order these things are important to you):

Price
Set-Up costs
Download Limit
Contract Period

Just a little pointer, the top 5 selling mobile broadband packages on my site at the moment are:

3 Mobile Broadband Plus - USB Stick - £15 p/m, 18 mth contract.
Vodafone Mobile Broadband - USB Stick - £15 p/m, 12 mth contract.
O2 Mobile Broadband - £15 p/m, 18 mth contract.
3 Mobile Broadband Plus - USB Stick - £15 p/m, 12 mth contract.
Vodafone Mobile Broadband (Free Laptop) - £15 p/m, 24 mth contract.

I have sprint Mobile Broadband Card and i have a wireless G router how do i set up wireless so my ps3 can get online and other computers? Thanks

You could create an adhavoc network using the laptop with the card in it as the router. This would allow you to spread the internet connection using Internet Connection Sharing

any answers appreciated. thanks. how do i connect my mobile broadband to xbox live?

all broadband can be use….. the problem is that what modem r u using……. if ur planning to use wires then your not going to have any problem… jsut connec the ethernet cables….. then open it…… but if ur going to use wireless….. then u have to buy 360 wireless adapter which is 99$
and not sure if itll work or compatible with ur wireless mode.

Broadband everywhere! New data technologies from major carriers will deliver over 1 Mb/s to mobile phone handsets and laptop computers in major metropolitan areas across the United States by the end of 2006. The ability to tap into a fast, low-latency network is changing the way people do business and causing a few developers to rethink their applications for an always-on broadband connected user with constant access to his or her personal device.

EV-DO is a high-speed data technology currently deployed by CDMA carriers in major markets. The latest version of EV-DO, revision A, promises up download speeds up to 3.1 Mb/s, upload speeds as fast as 1.8 Mb/s, and latency as low as 50ms. This low latency makes VoIP and video chat a reality over cellular-based networks. EV-DO is available through Sprint branded as Mobile Broadband for laptops or PowerVision for phone handsets. EV-DO is also available through Verizon Wireless branded as BroadbandAccess for laptops or V Cast for phone handsets.

HSDPA is a competing standard for GSM networks. It is capable of download speeds up to 3.6 Mb/s and uploads of 384 Kb/s. HSDPA allows simultaneous voice and data and can downgrade to older UMTS when a newer network is not available. Cingular brands their HSDPA offering as BroadbandConnect.

What would you do with a 1 Mb/s always-on connection in your pocket, on your laptop, or any other device? Om and I talk discuss current offerings from major U.S. carriers as well as some of the applications that are already taking advantage of these new ubiquitous broadband connections.

In the early days of mobile computing, only the most hardcore road-warriors in niche markets equipped their laptops with wireless connections, because transmission speeds were so painfully slow using the cellular technologies of the time.

As speeds increase with the rollout of 3G services and air-interfaces evolve from EV-DO and W-CDMA to EV-DO Rev A and HSDPA, wireless connectivity becomes progressively more useful to a growing pool of laptop users.

The original wireless modems for laptops were add-ons in the shape of PC cards, and indeed according to Philip Solis, senior analyst at ABI Research, “there are still several good years left in the PC card market.” Now, progressively more wireless modems are being built right into the computer, and it is there that the real long-term opportunity lies. That will produce a change in the dynamics of the market.

ABI Research estimates that shipments of embedded modems will equal those of PC cards by 2009.

“With PC cards,” says Solis, “mobile operators sell the cards and an associated mobile phone service. Changing service provider or upgrading to a better modem is a simple matter of purchasing a new and different card. Embedded modems, however, must be chosen at the time the laptop is purchased - before the service is activated.”

The consequence is that mobile operators “incentivize” laptop vendors with a “bounty” for every activation. Therefore, Solis advises, “modem manufacturers should take care to cultivate strong relationships with carriers and operators. Among the leading laptop modem vendors - Option NV, Novatel Wireless, Sierra Wireless and SonyEricsson - Option has been most proactive in pursuing such relationships, and it has produced results: we found Option to be the number one cellular modem vendor at the end of 2005.”

The ABI Research study, “Mobile Broadband to the Laptop” tracks and forecasts the market for cellular PC cards and internal modems in laptops by air interface from 2003 to 2011. For comparison, it includes forecasts and attach rates for PC cards and internal solutions for WiBro, WiMAX, Wi-Fi and cellular solutions, as well as vendor market share for cellular PC cards from 2003 to 2005. The study forms part of two subscription ABI Research services, the Mobile Broadband Research Service and the Mobile Devices Research Service.

What you can expect from T-Mobile Web'n'walk Mobile Broadband Max 10GB, All i can say is that dont buy mobile broadband YET as i think they are still working on it and seriously T-Mobile need to improve there services becouse at times you can expect very very low speed like eg 7 kb/sec thats how bad it can be.
